Not many historic sites can boast so many charms as the Blackbeard’s Castle on St. Thomas. The area’s centerpiece is an authentic castle tower built in the late 1600s by the Danes (who owned the islands at that time) to watch over the generous and coveted gateway to St. Thomas, the Charlotte Amalie Harbor.  Called Skytsborg Tower (“sky tower”), the structure afforded the Danish guard a much higher vantage point to spot approaching enemy ships than the Fort Christian, which is at the sea level.  How the  tower came to be named for Edward  “Blackbeard the Pirate” Teach is a mystery, but the tag remains to this day.

Currently, Blackbeard’s Castle offers sightseeing tours (including some finely restored  historic homes), a poolside overlook with a view of the town and harbor, and a restaurant, for superb dining under the stars. The Restaurant at Blackbeard’s Castle is an absolute “do” whether you desire a romantic dinner, or an exceptional outing among friends and family.
